Horezu Monastery Travel Experience

At the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, in the old Wallachia is a monastery unique in Europe for his architectural style. We are speaking about Horezu Monastery from Romania.

Last summer we have visit it and I think that all the persons interested in religious tours must put Horezu Monastery in their travel program.

Why to visit Horezu Monastery?

First of all, the Horezu Monastery belongs to the “Brancoveanu art” – a mixture style of Byzantine art, Renaissance art and Baroque art from the times of Constantin Brancoveanu (1688 – 1714). This prince was a Wallachian ruler, from the dynasty of Cantacuzene (Byzantine emperors) and Basarab (Wallachian rulers) who was very interested of culture and spirituality.

Horezu Monastery Romania

In his time has appeared a singular style inspired by the old Byzantine culture and Modern European Culture: a synthesis characterized by proportions, balance, purity, sculpture details, votive portraits and painted decorative works. Constantin Brancoveanu was killed like Christian martyr with his family by the Ottoman Turkish’s in Constantinople.

In his life time he builds Horezu Monastery (1690 – 1693) to have his tomb here, but his body will never arrive here.

If you are coming to Horezu Monastery, first you shall see an Italian Renaissance gate, than you shall enter into the monastery yard and a road will take you into a huge fortified cloister that has the big church into the center. The cloister is not a classic one, because from it you enter in different buildings (chapels, library, hospital, rooms, shops, aula magna, kitchen, etc.). The Horezu Monastery is in fact a little monastic town around the big church.

Horezu Monastery is one of the Pillars of the Romanian Culture and for his world uniqueness is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

El Monasterio de Horezu, Rumania

Al pie de los Cárpatos, en la antigua Valaquia es un monasterio único en Europa por su estilo arquitectónico. Estamos hablando del monasterio de Horezu de Rumania.

El verano pasado lo hemos visitado y creo que todas las personas interesadas en excursiones religiosas deben poner el monasterio de Horezu en su programa de viajes.

¿Por qué visitar el monasterio de Horezu?

En primer lugar, el monasterio de Horezu pertenece al „arte de Brancoveanu” – una mezcla de estilo de arte bizantino, renacentista y barroco de los tiempos de Constantin Brancoveanu (1688-1714). Este príncipe fue un gobernante valaquí, de la dinastía de Cantacuzene (emperadores bizantinos) y Basarab (gobernantes valaquíes), que estaba muy interesado en la cultura y la espiritualidad.

En su tiempo ha aparecido un estilo singular inspirado en la antigua cultura bizantina y la cultura europea moderna: síntesis caracterizada por proporciones, equilibrio, pureza, detalles de escultura, retratos votivos y obras decorativas pintadas. Constantin Brancoveanu fue asesinado como mártir cristiano con su familia por los turcos otomanos en Constantinopla.

En su vida él construye el monasterio de Horezu (1690 – 1693) para tener su tumba aquí, pero su cuerpo nunca llegará aquí.

De aquí, un camino le llevará al patio del monasterio y entrará en un enorme claustro fortificado, que tiene la gran iglesia en el centro. El claustro no es clásico, porque de él se entran en diferentes edificios (capillas, biblioteca, hospital, habitaciones, tiendas, aula magna, cocina, etc.). El monasterio de Horezu es de hecho una pequeña ciudad monástica alrededor de la iglesia grande.

El monasterio de Horezu es uno de los pilares de la cultura rumana y por su singularidad mundial es Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.

Bordei in Romania

From the Cucuteni culture (4500 BC), to middle ages and up to XIX century the famous Carpathian house was called “bordei”. What is a bordei or burdei?

A bordei is a half-dugout shelter made by wood and clay. In general is a home half underground and covered with soil where the vegetation is growing up. In the middle ages this types of houses are having more rooms, fire-rooms, cellars and living room.

A bordei is a sustainable house that is reducing the overall environmental impact, in winter is easy to heat and in summer is refreshing. The problem with this house is the flood. That’s why the bordei were builded on hills and in clay, argil like soil, also for a good air breath.

Now just in the Romanian Traditional Museums the tourist can see this home.

Saint Michael Cathedral Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca is the capital of Transylvania and the second town of Romania after Bucharest. Like all the world capitals, Cluj-Napoca is a cosmopolitan and a multiethnic city (German: Klausenburg; Hungarian: Kolozsvár; Medieval Latin: Castrum Clus; Claudiopolis Yiddish: קלויזנבורג‎, Kloiznburg).

The name of the capital of Transylvania is a mixture between the pre-Roman name of the settlement: Napoca and the Medieval Latin name: Clus. The result is Cluj-Napoca, known in common as Cluj.

For the Romanians, Cluj is the academic town. Here are the most important universities of Romania: Babes-Bolyai University (the largest university of Romania – 50.000 students), the Technical University, the Iuliu Hatieganu Medicine and Pharmacy University, the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, the University of Arts and Design and the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy.

All this are making of Cluj a lively town in development. The international community of Cluj is one of the biggest from Romania.

The biggest tourist attractions in Cluj-Napoca are: the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral, the Saint Michael Cathedral, Palaces and Museums (history, art, pharmacy, speleological and ethnological), the National Theater and the Opera Hall, the Cluj Arena, the Central Park and the Botanic Garden.

Cluj-Napoca has many old buildings, churches and sculptures and also communists neighborhoods. The most popular statue of Cluj is the Matthias Corvinus Monument from the Union Square, but the best sculpture in the town is the Saint George Sculpture from the Reformat Church Square.

From the Fortress hill of Cluj-Napoca you can see the entire town. Come to Cluj and taste the Transylvanian spirit!
